Fat Reduction in Charleston, SC | Réforme Dermatology
What Is a Fat Reduction?
There is a common misconception about the double chin, also known as submental fullness, that is primarily due to a person being overweight. In truth, a person can be a perfectly healthy weight and still have stubborn chin fat. Unfortunately, there aren’t any at-home remedies for a double chin. If you are looking for a way to eliminate small despots of fat without surgery, Kybella® injections at Réforme Dermatology & Aesthetics in Charleston, SC, may be the solution you’ve been looking for.
Kybella® is an FDA-approved injectable solution composed of synthetic deoxycholic acid, a compound found naturally in the body that breaks down fat cells in the targeted area. When administered into the fat, Kybella® gets to work immediately, destroying the fat cells so that the body can eliminate them naturally. After just a few short weeks, patients are left with a more contoured chin and jawline that takes years and weight off of their face. Often, several rounds of treatment are recommended.

What Can Cause A Double Chin?
The most typical causes of submental fullness include weight gain, genetics, and aging. Weight gain is the most common culprit for the development of a double chin, but losing excess weight does not guarantee the elimination of submental fullness. The reason for this may contribute to genetics. If a double chin runs in the family, weight loss will not be able to eliminate it fully. Additionally, age is another factor. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and muscle mass, resulting in fullness along the jaw and chin.
Before the development of Kybella®, the only way to remove stubborn chin fat was through liposuction or a surgical neck lift. Now, Kybella® offers a non-surgical way to eliminate your double chin in as little as a few office visits.
What Is The Power Behind Kybella?
Kybella® is composed of the active ingredient deoxycholic acid, a substance that breaks down fat cells. Once they are destroyed, they cannot return, meaning results are permanent. The deoxycholic acid in Kybella® is synthetic and safely produced in a laboratory environment. When the acid is strategically injected into the treatment area, it starts to break down the cell membranes and destroy the targeted fat cells. The body will then metabolize these damaged cells and eliminate them through a natural process. The removal of excess submental fat enhances the appearance of an aging neck and improves the chin and jawline for a more aesthetic profile.

How Many Treatments Of Kybella Will You Need?
After evaluating your profile and the degree of submental fat you would like to target, your injector will determine the appropriate quantity of sessions you will need and design a treatment plan around your goals. The amount of treatments needed varies from patient to patient. Many patients experience results with 2-3 treatments of Kybella®, while some see results after just one treatment.
It’s important to mention that results from Kybella® are not immediate and will take time for the fat to be destroyed. You’ll have follow-up treatment with your injector to evaluate your results. When the desired effects have been achieved, no further treatment will be necessary, and you can enjoy your permanent results.
How Are Kybella Treatments Performed in Charleston, SC?
Treatment begins with the area being thoroughly cleansed and prepared. Your injector will mark the injection points with a surgical pen for precision placement of Kybella®. Then, a topical numbing agent will be applied to ensure your comfort.
Once the treatment area is fully prepared, your Kybella® administer will begin injecting a small amount of Kybella® into the marked injection points using a fine needle. The entire procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete. After treatment, patients are advised to apply ice or a cold pack to the treated area for 10 to 15 minutes at a time to help reduce swelling and bruising.
After treatment, patients are free to return to their normal activities with the exclusion of vigorous exercise. Allow 24 hours to pass before engaging in strenuous activities to allow Kybella® to fully take effect and reduce any chance of complications or infections.
Are There Any Side Effects With Kybella?
Common side effects of Kybella® include swelling, bruising, redness, irritation, and tenderness. Swelling and bruising may last for about a week. Any redness, irritation, or tenderness should resolve itself after 24 to 48 hours. Since deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring substance, any adverse side effects like allergic reactions or rejection of the injections are uncommon. If you notice swelling and irritation persist or become worse, don’t hesitate to contact us for a follow-up appointment.
Can Kybella Be Combined With Other Treatments?
If your aesthetic concerns expand past submental fullness to facial lines and wrinkles or lost volume, Kybella® can be combined with other non-invasive treatments for more comprehensive results. Various dermal fillers and other cosmetic injectables, such as Botox®, are often used to treat a variety of facial areas. Injectable neurotoxins, like Botox®, work to smooth fine lines and wrinkles by temporarily relaxing the muscles.
Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected just below the surface of the skin to provide volume and support. While these cosmetic injectables provide outstanding anti-aging benefits on their own, when combined with each other, they can provide personalized results that refresh and enhance the appearance.
