Treatments For Hair Loss in Charleston, SC | Réforme Dermatology & Aesthetics
At some point, most people will have to contend with hair loss. It’s natural to lose anywhere from 50 to 100 stands of hair a day as a part of your hair’s natural growth cycle. However, when you start to see noticeable thinning or bald patches, it’s time to seek out an expert’s help. The most common type of hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia or pattern hair loss, which is common among both men and women. Unfortunately, it takes a lot more than the typical over-the-counter shampoo and biotin supplements to adequately treat the effects of pattern baldness.

At Réforme Dermatology & Aesthetics, we use science-based research and technology when it comes to treating and reversing the effects of androgenetic alopecia and other types of hair loss. Double board-certified dermatologist Dr. Vasile targets the root cause of your hair loss while stimulating the hair follicles to create new, healthy, and strong hair regrowth.

The Hair Growth Cycle
Hair loss, or alopecia, is a common disorder caused by a disruption to the body’s natural hair cycle. Hair loss can be seen nearly anywhere on the body, but it most commonly affects the scalp. On average, the scalp has 100,000 hairs that cycle through periods of growing, resting, shedding, and regenerating.
The hair growth cycle happens in three phases:
- The Anagen Phase— During this first phase, hair is growing actively.
- The Catagen Phase— During this middle phase, the hair follicle becomes dormant.
- Telogen Phase— During this last phase, the hairs enter a resting state and fall out.
Then, the cycle repeats itself. However, if this cycle is disrupted, or if a hair follicle is damaged, the hair may begin to fall out more quickly than it’s able to regenerate, which leads to hair loss. While it is normal for between 50 – 100 hairs to fall out daily, anything beyond this is seen as abnormal and should be assessed by a dermatologist if it is causing distress or concern.
Different Types of Hair Loss
Androgenetic Alopecia
Androgenetic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss. More than 50 million men and 30 million women are diagnosed with it in The United States alone. Commonly called male or female pattern baldness, androgenetic alopecia is genetic but can be managed with prescription medications or hair loss treatments.
Telogen Effluvium
Telogen effluvium is the excessive shedding of hair following a metabolic stressor, dramatic hormonal change, or certain medications. This is the type of hair loss people experience after childbirth or other extremely stressful events. Generally, this type of hair loss will resolve on its own. If, however, you do not see hair regrowth within six months and are concerned about hair loss, you should talk to a board-certified dermatologist.
Anagen Effluvium
Anagen effluvium is a fast, all-at-once kind of hair loss that is generally caused by medical treatments, such as chemotherapy, or exposure to certain chemicals. While chemo treatments are excellent at killing cancer cells, they can also shut down hair follicle production nearly anywhere on the body. After chemotherapy ends or contact with the toxin ceases, the hair is usually able to grow back, although it might be thinner than before. If that’s the cause, a dermatologist can offer medication or hair loss treatments to help your hair grow back more quickly.
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition that attacks the hair follicles. This causes hair to fall out and stops new hair from growing. Dermatologists can treat alopecia areata with prescription medications or hair loss treatments that help stimulate the hair to regrow.
Other types of hair loss including tinea capitis, lichen planopilaris, dissecting cellulitis, and central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia are caused by fungal skin conditions that affect the health of your scalp and lead to hair loss. In these cases, medication will need to be administered to heal the symptoms before treatments to help with hair regrowth can begin.
What Hair Loss Treatments Do We Offer at Réforme Dermatology & Aesthetics?
Our hair loss treatments at Réforme Dermatology & Aesthetics in Charleston, SC, involve advanced dermatological techniques used to treat the cause of hair loss while stimulating new growth within the hair follicles. Treatments begin with an assessment of the patient’s overall health, hygiene, age, and diagnosis of the patient’s hair loss type. This thorough evaluation will help determine the best treatment option.
We offer a few common hair loss treatments in our Mount Pleasant, SC clinic, including:
Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)— Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy is an effective, non-surgical treatment that uses the body’s own healing capabilities to prompt new hair regrowth. Backed by years of research, PRP for hair restoration is FDA-approved to help men and women suffering from hair thinning, hair aging, and premature hair loss as an alternative to costly surgical hair treatments. During a PRP session, the patient’s blood is collected, cleansed through a centrifuge, and then injected into the areas where new hair growth is desired.
The high concentration of platelets and protein-rich therapy within the patient’s own blood help repair, rejuvenate, and control the hair’s growth cycle, stimulating dormant hair follicles, and encouraging healthy hair regrowth.
Keralase— Keralase is a non-surgical treatment that starts with laser scalp pre-conditioning followed by a scalp massage using Kerafactor serum. These serums contain seven bio-identical growth factors that have been proven to target known deficiencies and scalp conditions that contribute to poor scalp health and lack of growth. These growth factors are delivered in a nanoliposome carrier for increased absorption. The serum is able to travel deep into the laser-formed channels created during the pre-condition laser treatments to stimulate hair growth. The entire procedure requires about 15-30 minutes with minimal downtime.

Charleston, SC Treatments For Hair Loss FAQS
How does Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy work for hair loss?
PRP therapy stimulates dormant hair follicles and encourages natural hair regrowth by using your body’s own platelets, which are abundant in growth factors. A tiny sample of your blood is taken, processed, and the PRP is injected into specific scalp regions as part of the treatment.
What is Keralase and how does it help with thinning hair?
Keralase combines laser-based scalp resurfacing with a topical serum containing growth factors and peptides to promote fuller, thicker hair. It creates tiny microchannels in the scalp to allow for deeper penetration of nutrients, promoting optimal scalp and follicle rejuvenation.
Who is a good candidate for PRP or Keralase hair restoration?
Men and women in good general health who are suffering from early-to-moderate hair thinning make ideal candidates. Patients with androgenetic alopecia or those looking to naturally increase their hair density can benefit greatly from these treatments.
How many sessions of PRP or Keralase are needed for hair regrowth?
A course of three to six treatments, separated by four to six weeks, followed by maintenance sessions, is usually beneficial for most patients. Dr. Vasile will develop a customized treatment plan according to your objectives and hair loss pattern.
Is there any downtime after PRP or Keralase treatments?
Both procedures are minimally invasive with little to no downtime. Patients may experience temporary redness or sensitivity at the treatment site but can typically return to regular activities the same day.
How soon will I see results from hair loss treatments like PRP or Keralase?
Results vary, but many patients begin noticing improvements in hair texture, thickness, and shedding within 3–6 months after starting treatment.
Is PRP or Keralase hair restoration safe?
Yes, both treatments are FDA-cleared and considered safe when performed by a qualified provider like Dr. Gabriella Vasile. PRP is a natural approach using your own blood, and Keralase is a needle-free, comfortable treatment with no side effects on the body.
How much does a hair restoration treatment cost in Charleston, SC?
The provider, location, and number of sessions required can all impact the cost of hair loss treatments like Keralase and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy. During your appointment at Réforme Dermatology & Aesthetics, Dr. Gabriella Vasile will discuss your goals and hair loss pattern in order to create a customized treatment plan and quote.
Can I combine PRP and Keralase treatments for better hair restoration results?
Yes, many patients benefit from a combination approach. PRP stimulates follicles internally, while Keralase enhances scalp absorption of growth factors topically. Dr. Vasile can tailor a hybrid plan based on your specific hair loss needs.
Are hair loss treatments effective for both men and women?
Absolutely. Both PRP and Keralase are effective for male and female pattern hair loss and thinning due to age, hormonal changes, stress, or other causes.
What should I avoid before and after hair restoration treatments?
To achieve optimal results, patients should avoid alcohol, anti-inflammatory medications, and vigorous scalp manipulation before treatment. Post-treatment, avoid sun exposure, sweating, and hair products for at least 24 hours.
